Underground, Automated Bike Parking in Tokyo

An automated parking service in Tokyo takes commuters bikes and slides them into a robot-controlled underground parking area. Apparently 90% of commuters take mass transit in Tokyo and 30% of those people use bikes to get them part of the way to their destination. New York City needs to find a way to give people incentives to get more cars off the road. Ideas like this would make it much easier for commuters to park their bikes away safely.

Tokyo bicycle parking tower

Tokyo has a sick bicycle parking/locking solution that involves bringing your bike into a parking facility with an automated robotic parking attendant. You slide your bike into a hatch, receive a ticket and the machine slides your bike into the tower below. When you return, swipe your ticket and the machine retrieves your bike.

We desperately need something like this in NYC. I would think good places to start are Union Square and Columbus Circle. Come on you American parking companies. Get with it.
